The role of the rainwater system in preventing housing degradation
Being professionals in the field, we set out to talk in detail about how the rainwater system protects the home from moisture, collecting water from the roof and draining it away from the foundation of the house.
Specifically, we will discuss 3 ways in which the rainwater system can prevent construction degradation:
1. Prevents the risk of infiltration on the roof
When the water is not drained in an organized way, the risk of infiltration increases considerably, especially if the gutters and downspouts are not properly sized and the water accumulates excessively in them, remaining partially on the roof slopes or infiltrating under eaves.
Therefore, in addition to the installation of the rainwater drainage system itself, the sizing of its elements is equally important, according to the size of the roof. The risks of infiltration at the level of the roof and even of gutters and downspouts are considerably reduced in this way.
2. Prevents the appearance of mold on the walls of the house
In order to highlight this aspect, we briefly resume the ones mentioned so far. What is the role of the rainwater system? Through gutters and downspouts, it collects water from rainfall, which drains down the slopes of the roof, and discharges it away from the foundation of the house.
In this way, the walls of the house remain dry, and the risk of developing mold, the formation of microscopic saprophytic fungi harmful to both human health and the strength of construction, is greatly reduced. Moreover, the rainwater system also helps to maintain the clean and tidy appearance of the exterior walls.
3. Prevents weakening of the strength of the foundation
If the roof is not equipped with a rainwater system, the water that will drain on its slopes, due to precipitation, will reach the walls of the house, directly at its base, soaking the soil in which the foundation is built. The same effect will occur when, following the heating of the outside temperature, the snow accumulated on the roof will fall exactly at the base of the house, and will gradually melt and, again, soak the soil.
Too much water at the base of the foundation will weaken the stability of the entire house, and if there is a storage space in the basement of the house, it will be gradually flooded, sometimes becoming inaccessible. Proper installation of a rainwater system can greatly reduce these risks by collecting and directing water away from the foundation, even if it will not keep the soil at the base of the house completely dry.
But be careful! To be truly efficient, the system must be made of a hard material (not a porous one), such as Nordic steel, which is part of our Scandic rainwater system.
Having been active in this field for more than 19 years, we have encountered different situations. We have taken them all as lessons and we can say that, thanks to them, we have considerable experience today in terms of complex roofing solutions. We studied and discovered that, in order to avoid the problems mentioned above, it is necessary not only a rainwater system made of high quality materials, but also its correct installation.
